FDA -Breast Implant Risks
Breast Implant Medical Terminology
Areola - The
small darkened area around the nipple of the breast.
Antibiotics - Drugs that fight
infections.
Benelli - Breast lift technique
that is considered less invasive and was designed with the
scars being around the areolae. With the Benelli, a donut
shaped piece of tissue around the areola border is removed
and the surrounding tissue sutured to the areola. The incisions
are normally closed with purse string sutures. Sometimes a
little more tissue is removed above the areola (like the crescent)
to compensate for a lifting effect when it is sutured.
Betadine - A popular tradename
iodine-containing topical disinfectant agent.
Biopsies - Procedure
that involves obtaining a tissue specimen for microscopic
analysis to establish a precise diagnosis.
Cosmetics - Substances
intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying,
promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without
affecting the body's structure or functions.
Lupus - A systemic disease
that results from an autoimmune mechanism. Individuals with
lupus will produce antibodies to their own body tissues. The
resultant inflammation can cause kidney damage, arthritis,
pericarditis and vasculitis.
Malignant - Cancerous:
T ending to become progressively worse and could result in
death.
Mastectomy - Surgical
removal of all or part of a breast, sometimes including excision
of the underlying pectoral muscles and regional lymph nodes,
usually performed as a treatment for cancer.
Neuropathic breast pain -
Chronic pain of the breasts resulting from injury to the
nervous system.
Orthopedic - Concerned
with the correction or prevention of skeletal deformities.
Paralysis - Loss or impairment
of motor function in a part due to lesion of the neural or
muscular mechanism, also by analogy, impairment of sensory
function.
Postoperative - Following
a surgical operation.
Rheumatologist
- A medical doctor who specializes in medicine concerned
with the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis.
Saline implants - A silicone
rubber shell that is inflated to the desired size with sterile
saline. Most implants have a valve that can be sealed by the
surgeon. These have the potential for adjustments.
Scar tissue - The connective
tissue forming a scar and composed chiefly of fibroblasts
in recent scars and largely of dense collagenous fibers in
old scars.
Silicone implants - A
silicone rubber shell that is filled with a fixed amount of
silicone gel. Each implant has a patch that covers the manufacturing
port of the implant. Silicone implants vary in shell surface
(smooth/textured), shape, profile, volume, shell thickness,
and number of shell lumens. Most silicone gel-filled implants
are not adjustable.
Spinal cord stimulator - Medical
procedure that involves the placement of a very small wire
that is placed directly into the region adjacent to the spinal
cord to stimulate special nerves that help to control pain.
Subcutaneous mastectomies -
Surgical removal of the breast tissue but not the overlying
skin (removing all the breast tissue and leaving the skin
and nipple).
Sutures - Materials used in closing
a surgical or traumatic wound (stitches, staples, etc).
